Mountain Gnome Traits

Mountain Gnomes are a sub-race of Luchuirp gnomes originating in the Age of Ice, most believe through the influence of Mulcarn. They are stouter than the average Luchuirp (rock) gnome at 4’ to 4’6" height and 60-90 pounds weight, with pale skin, dark eyes and white hair. Most live in the high hills or mountains along or beyond the borders of Luchuirp civilization.

Xar-ke’rin spent his entire life in the mountains with the Maseach rangers, having been rescued as a young child from the remains of an ambushed caravan 30 years ago (gnome lifespan in Arcanearth ranges 150-250 years, significantly less than their larger cousins the Khazad). He keeps his reasons for joining the rune-heroes to himself and is virtually mute unless speech is absolutely required. If a reply is not warranted, Xar simply pauses to stare at those addressing him, then continues whatever he was doing. Jocundity may well be a concept beyond Xar’s imagination.

The Maseach (maaz-e-ahk): an informal association of gnome and human mountaineers warding the eastern slopes of the Dragonspines from Cape Farewell in the north and as far south as the legendary City of Gold. These rangers guard civilized Luchuirp lands from incursions out of the mountains. They are the hereditary enemies of Mulcarn’s ice elementals (Nive, Frostlings, etc.), white dragons, frost giants, orcs, goblins and mountain ogres. About 20% are human and 80% gnome, with over half the gnomes being ‘Mountain Gnomes’. The typical Maseach ranger is a loner who can’t abide the restrictions of civilization and has chosen a rugged, isolated life among the chasms and peaks of the Dragonspines. New members are inducted and knowledge exchanged at periodic conclaves held at secret locations high among the mountains. Elder rangers safeguard the secrets of Maseach earth-magic so that it may be safely passed down to the next generation. The Maseach owe nominal fealty to the Luchuirp King in the north and more recently, the Malakim Duke of Ultigar in the south, but in practice live beyond the control of any authority.
