Arcanearth is based on Derek “Kael” Paxton’s dark fantasy setting of Erebus and the ‘Fall From Heaven’ (FFH) fantasy mod for Civilization IV. The campaign uses CivIV/FFH as a ‘strategic layer’ engine for politics, empires, cities and geography including a detailed custom world-map presented to players in RPTools/Maptool. With every game session, a certain number of CivIV/FFH turns are played out in the strategic layer by AIs representing each empire. Wars, diplomacy and major events in the strat layer can impact players as they journey through the world or provide useful background material for new adventures. If nothing else, the strategic layer should serve to enhance the players exploits and lend the campaign a verisimilitude it might otherwise be lacking.
The full-size GM-version of the CivIV/FFH strategic layer map would measure 10′×5′ if printed at full resolution. The world-map is broken into nine sections for ease of use in Maptools. The player version of the world map found in this wiki is downsized and modified using Paint.Net, MS Paint and Corel Photo-Paint.
